Lake trout are Yukon’s heavyweight and a top request. They grow slowly, meaning a big laker has been in these lakes for decades. Kyle targets them by boat in summer and on ice in winter.
Open water is best from June into early August, and again in September as the water cools and the fish move shallower. Through the winter the ice fishing stays good for lakers right across the season. They are a cold-water fish, so they sit deep in the heat of midsummer and come up within reach in spring, fall and winter.
From the boat it is jigging and trolling over deep structure; on the ice we jig the same humps and breaklines. Garmin sonar shows the depth and the fish, so you are dropping into the right spot rather than guessing. If you have not fished for lakers before, Kyle will walk you through it and supply all the gear.

Plenty of lakers run in the 3 to 10-pound range for steady action, and the bigger lakes hold fish well into the double digits and beyond. Because these fish grow so slowly, we handle the big ones with care and release them to keep the fishery strong. A 20-pound-plus laker is a genuine trophy and a real possibility on the right day.
